Usually you will find me in Galveston, Texas, working for The Galveston County Daily News, a community newspaper. I cover the "city" beat, which includes local politics, business and development. While my beat often revolves around city council and other committee meetings, I have had the opportunity to tell some amazing stories in the last two and a half years.
In 2005, I traveled with photographer David Ingram to New Orleans to be "embedded" with the Texas National Guard Unit from New Braunfels. We stayed with them for 5 days in the New Orleans Convention Center, and shared their experience with readers back home through a special section that featured the individual thoughts and reflections of five of the soldiers. Our work was recognized by the Texas Press Association at its 2006 mid-winter conference, winning both the Blue Moon Award and the "Best in Show" selection.
I am a fairly recent sojourner in the amazing field of Journalism. I started my "career" life as a web developer, which gives me a unique perspective on the emerging trend of convergence in news delivery. I believe that the reporter of the new millennium will not classify him or herself as a newspaper, radio or television reporter. The reporter of the future will be able to deliver the news in all formats — written, spoken and visual. The Internet obviously will be the universal delivery medium. While I talk about this as a "future" concept, many media outlets already are finding success in this new arena.
I thought the time I spent working with the Internet would be wasted when I transitioned into journalism. Instead, I found it set me up perfectly to embrace the future of reporting in a full-fledged bear hug! Through this site and the projects I showcase, I hope to make a significant contribution to "new" journalism, combining written articles, audio files, picture slide-shows and video clips.
My first experiment comes to you from Kenya, Africa. This trip is definitely not part of my daily routine, but when the opportunity to travel half way around the world and report on a subject of international importance presented itself, I was not going to pass it up! Read more about the trip and my goals here.
